Chinese Language

Collected here are some websites that I find helpful for learning the Chinese language.

  • zhongwen.com (中文.com)

This website is based on the classic etymological dictionary, Shuo Wen Jie Zi (說文解字), from the Han Dynasty. You can search the Chinsese characters by pinyin.

  • Chinese Dictionary & Thesaurus - YellowBridge

At this website, you can search the Chinese characters by writing them with a mouse, by Pinyin, or by English. It has a good stroke order animator for both the traditional and simplified versions.

  • Dict.CN - English-Chinese Chinese-English Online Dictionary

At this website you will find both an English-Chinese dictionary and a Chinese-English dictionary.

  • Google Input Tools Chrome extension

On this web page, you will find information on how to install and us Input Tools Chrome extension on the Chrome browser. With this extension, you will be able to enter Chinese characters from a standard U.S. keyboard.

  • Learn a Word (学个词)

This is a website sponsored by Voice of America which consists of one-minute segments. A new English word is presented in each segment. Several examples of the word usage are given and both text and audio are provided. It’s a great way for learning both English and Chinese!

  • Popular American (流行美语)

This is another website sponsored by Voice of America which consists of five-minute segments. Two English idioms are presented in each segment. Both text and audio are provided. It’s also a great way for learning both English and Chinese!
